TOUR FAQs

What to prepare for the trip?

Passports

Sun cream

A small backpack

Sandals or similar

Mosquito repellent

Toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, towel, soap, shampoo etc)

Luggage?

You can either ask to leave those at your hotel (if possible) and carry a small bag/ backpack for your trip OR you can carry them on the tour. Those can be left on the car/ at the homestay.

Wear?

We do not have a dress code for our tours however, dress standards are conservative throughout Asia, especially outside major cities. To respect this and for your own comfort, we recommend modest clothing. This means clothing that covers your shoulders and knees. Loose, lightweight, long clothing is both respectful and cool in the predominantly hot Asian climate.

What is the homestay like?

Feel like home is what we can describe. Simple, basic but is sure to be a lasting memory of your tour. Our homestays are real local homes where you will stay with locals and see how the locals live, work and eat.

The room type is private OR or multi-share dormitory-style. However, the private rooms are limited so they will be offered on a first-come/first-serve basis. So if other guests book out your desired room, before you request us this type of room, we will only be able to arrange you the multi-share dormitory-style room.

Each room at the homestay is provided Vietnamese mattress, bed sheet, blanket, mosquito net and fan. The bathrooms and toilets (western style) are shared.

Homestay alternative?

Not so keen on staying in a homestay? No problem! Let’s stay in a Hotel instead.

However, this is a pre-designed tour which specializes in homestay and cycling. If you join a group tour we cannot change the activities out of consideration for our other guests. Thus, we have to make this tour private OR customize this tour base on your requests.

If you are still interested in the cycling, cooking and have dinner at a homestay, you still can take the "Mekong Trails & Tales" PRIVATE tour, we will just change the overnight at homestay to a 2 or 3-star hotel option. We will travel to Can Tho (takes 30 minutes) after dinner time (8 or 9 PM) to check-in to the hotel.

Otherwise, you can take a CUSTOM tour.

Is cycling safe and children-friendly?

Yes! Our tour is kid friendly. We design the tour to be entertained and suitable for guests from 4 years and older. Family with the child is under 4 is NOT recommended for this tour.

However, for safety reasons, we do not provide small bikes for young children who are under 12 years of age, as local traffics behavior is quite different from that from the West or developed countries. Children are under 12 are REQUIRED to sit on the back of the bike, baby seat for the bicycle is provided for children from 4-5 years.

In some exceptional cases, the Western children (ages from 9-12) are taller the average Asian children, she/he can ride a bike her/himself.

What is the riding like?

The cycling is approximately 10 - 12 km long and we cycle mostly on flat concrete paths and small paved, rural roads. We will make a few stops during the trip to visit local sights such as local workshop, temple, rice fields and also a water break. Thus, anyone who can reasonably ride a bike can do this ride.

Please note that our tour includes a 2,5 - 3 hours cycling as a sightseeing activity, it is NOT a cycling type of tour. Therefore, the bikes which are provided on the tour are typical Vietnamese student bikes.

Cycling alternative?

Can not/ do not like riding a bicycle? No problem. We will provide an alternative.

However, if you join a small group tour we CANNOT change the activities out of consideration for our other guests. Therefore, you will have to take a CUSTOM tour. Please send us your requests and we design your own special tour!

Continue to Phu Quoc / Phnom Penh after the tour?

Yep! This tour is for you.

The tour ends either in Ho Chi Minh City at around 5 pm (default) or Can Tho at around 1 pm where you can take a bus to Rach Gia (3 hours) OR Chau Doc (3,5 hours) and then continue your way to Phu Quoc / Phnom Penh.

Please note that boat to Phu Quoc only starts TWICE per day at around 8:00 AM and 1:00 PM, AND the express boat to Phnom Penh only start ONCE per day at around 7:30 AM. This means you have to stay overnight in Rach Gia / Chau Doc on the date of your tour finish.

Is there any malaria or dengue fever in the Mekong Delta?

Malaria is now under control in Vietnam so the risk of malaria is very low but dengue should be more of a concern which is common in Vietnam.

Although Mekong Delta is NOT a malaria area and mosquitoes are only active at dusk and dawn, you should consider using insect repellent if you intend to take on the trip.

Is tipping customary in Vietnam?

Although our trips are inclusive of all costs and we ensure our guides and local staff are paid fairly, if you’re happy with the services provided a tip – though NOT compulsory – is appropriate. While it may not be customary to you, it’s of great significance to the people who will take care of you during your travels and inspires excellent service. Although can be difficult to source we advise you to carry small notes of local currency each day to make tipping easier.

The following amounts are per person suggestions based on local considerations and feedback from our past travelers:

  • Restaurants: Local markets and basic restaurants – round your bill up to the nearest US$1. More up-market restaurants we suggest 10% to 15% of your bill.
  • Drivers: You may have a range of drivers on your trip. Some may be with you for a short journey while others may be with you for a few days. We would suggest a higher tip for those more involved with the group, however, we suggest US$1-US$2 per day for drivers.
  • Your Tour Guide: We suggest US$3-US$5 per day for your tour guide for outstanding service throughout your trip

Of course, you are free to tip more or less as you see fit, depending on your perception of service quality and the length of your trip. Remember, a tip is NOT compulsory and should only be given when you receive excellent service. However, please DO NOT tip with coins, very small denomination notes, or dirty and ripped notes. This is regarded as culturally as an insult.

We had 8 people on this Mekong trip. 8 is the maximum number. Our guide gave us an interesting commentary throughout our stay. He informed us well about the itinerary and places we visited. There were some breaks on the journey. The highlight of the 2 days was the bike ride, homestay, and local foods. The rice wine was worth a try. We enjoyed breakfast on the floating markets and eating pineapple on the top of a pineapple boat! The trip was well-organised, interesting, and a good insight into a little bit of Vietnamese life. I would thoroughly recommend this company.

We were super happy having Tung as a guide for the two-day Mekong tour. We were traveling with our 7 years old child and he made everything he could to make it super easy. The cycling trip was long but absolutely amazing. Everything was great (food, homestay, car, etc.) Highly recommend this trip.

Because we arrived in the morning in Ho Chi Minh City but couldn't meet the normal time for the tour, Innoviet Tours was very helpful to rearrange our schedule. As a result, they pick us up at the airport with our backpacks and adjusted our schedule so we experience everything a tour had to offer but in a different order. Our guide Tung did everything he could to make our experience a great adventure. He spoke very good English. Our driver Duc drove us 4 hours to the Delta. He was very flexible when we wanted to stop for photos..especially the flower market. He also kept an eye on our luggage the whole time. The first day we were on the river in a boat (two of us, the guide and the boat driver). Then, we got on a hand rowing sampan into the narrow canals lined with mangrove bushes. It was like being in a canoe in Canada. We visited two families for lunch on the delta and spent the evening with a homestay family. We cooked dinner with them. It was rustic but an incredible experience to see how three generations lived together. The next morning we went to a local market. It was amazing to see all the different parts and kinds of meat hanging. We then rode some ferries with the locals and cycled on the cement pathways through the villages in the delta. It was awesome. My wife had some challenges with the bike on the narrow passageways so That Tung rode her around for 3 hours. That was very helpful and kind of him. I'm sure he was tired afterward. The tour was definitely one of our highlights in Vietnam. Tung really helped make the tour a remarkable experience. He went out of his way to enrich and accommodate your personal requests. He is very knowledgable and informative. I highly recommend him as a tour guide.

The best part of the trip (and the reason we spent extra money) was the personal attention we received during our tour. Tung, our guide, went above and beyond and answered my 1 million questions about Vietnam's culture and history. The cycle was the best part, through village roads and beautiful rice patties. The kids who come out to say hello are too cute, just remember to say Sin Chao to them and they will giggle and giggle at your mispronunciation. Every part was well-organized, comfortable and authentic. The floating market noodle experience was awesome and we could see that other people who were not on our tour were jealous that we got to stop and eat at the floating market and they just cruised by. The homestay accommodation was basic, so do not expect 5 star equipment, but expect 5 star service and lots of character. Our host family sat down with us and the oldest son Nguyen did a magic show for us (he's hilarious). The fried chicken was super delicious.

My children and I wanted to experience authentic Vietnam and so we booked this Mekong 2-day homestay with Innoviet. We were the only ones on the tour with our guide Hiep - and he was a big part of making our trip so fantastic. We went from one activity to another seamlessly. The activities included visiting various going through canals in rowing boats, cycling in rice fields, visiting pagodas, and floating markets. The homestay was a true one - we literally stayed in the room of someone's house on an island in the delta. They made a living from making rice paper and growing fruit and vegetable. Our host's house was very basic but clean and they cooked us delicious meals. The bedroom and bed were simple but we had a light and fan in the room and, importantly, a mosquito net. Some people might find the homestay a bit too rustic but it was a great experience for all of us and just what we were after. A big thanks to our guide who was such a lovely, helpful young man.

I was traveling with my friend and it was our first experience in Vietnam. We had a very good guide who did his best to look after and give us a lot of information and taught us a few basic Vietnamese words. we saw a lot in the time. The homestay family were friendly and welcoming and the food was delicious.

We booked the 2-day Mekong Delta with homestay which was the best tour we did in Vietnam. As their office was near our hostel, we thought we would pop in and book directly with them. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted as old friends, and even given green tea and biscuits! The tour was a little more expensive than other tours, but when you experience it you know why. The whole two days did we bump into any other tourists. It was completely off the beaten track, and luckily we only had a group of 4, so we always had the boat to ourselves. We cycled, fished and learned how to make AMAZING spring rolls with a lovely host who runs the homestay, we explored the delta on a small rowing boat, and one of the highlights was having breakfast early on the 2nd day at the floating market...A lady rowed her boat up to ours and made us yummy sweet coconut rolls. Our tour guide was great and answered all our questions, and being a local, knew all the good places to go for coffee, etc, and he gave us a great tour of the market. Don't think twice about booking this tour. It's completely worth paying the extra few dollars!

We were two girls going to the Mekong 2- day Delta with the host family. We had a guide just for us and he was really great, he taught us many things about his country and did everything to made us happy with our stay. It was a really immersive experience, we went to places where we were the only tourists. We did a cycling tour along the river, visited temples, did a boat trip, went to the floating market, local market. it was a really unforgettable experience and I really recommend it!

For it will give you a really nice insight into the daily lives of the wonderful locals, who are all so welcoming and happy to meet you. This trip is not about luxury, but about the authentic, delicious food and well-organized program with enough activities to get the most out of our time without exhausting too much. The Mekong Delta-time we had with our wonderful guide Hào was the highlight t of our 2,5 week holiday. Thanks Hào for treating us like friends and the team!

My husband and I joined Hao on a 2 day experience in Mekong Delta. The tour was very well put together, Hao looked after us and answered all our questions. We enjoyed the homestay and the floating market - we did not know what to expect but it turned out to be an amazing adventure, plenty of photo opportunities, meeting lovely people, trying new foods. Two days was the right amount of time for us to soak in the views and experience the authentic Mekong life. You will be going on the same ferries the locals use, dine with them, so we felt is a good way to experience the area. Thank you Hao and Innoviet Travel!
