Vinh Long is one of 13 provinces in the Mekong Delta, about 130 kilometers from Ho Chi Minh City. Due to this distance, this region is less visited in day

Vinh Long, situated within the Mekong Delta, is one of the 13 provinces in this region and is located approximately 130 kilometers away from Ho Chi Minh City. Because of its relatively greater distance from the city, Vinh Long tends to receive fewer visitors compared to popular day tour destinations like My Tho and Tien Giang. Even for multi-day tours, the majority of people often opt for destinations such as Ben Tre and Can Tho.

This, in turn, results in an enriching experience when you choose to explore Vinh Long. The region retains its authentic, local charm, offering a genuine and immersive experience that feels deeply connected to the culture and traditions of the area.

Things to do in Vinh Long

1. Boat tour

Much like many other destinations in the Mekong Delta, the most delightful way to discover the Vinh Long region is through a boat excursion. A boat tour provides a comprehensive experience, taking you along the main rivers that flank the city and guiding you through the smaller, picturesque side channels that weave through the countryside.

There are motorboats available, which enable you to cover greater distances swiftly and navigate across the wide rivers. Alternatively, you can opt for smaller, traditional sampan rowing boats, allowing you to leisurely glide through the narrow, meandering channels. This serene mode of exploration allows you to savor the tranquility of the surroundings and explore every nook and cranny of the Mekong Delta.

As you journey by boat, you'll have the wonderful opportunity to observe local life unfolding along the riverbanks. The itinerary may include stops at various islets, where you can visit fruit orchards and immerse yourself in the vibrant tapestry of local village life. It's a truly enriching experience that provides a taste of the authentic rhythms of the region.

2. Floating markets in Vinh Long

1. Look up On floating market

Located in the province of Vinh Long within the Mekong Delta, you'll find a unique floating market situated in the Tra On District. This bustling market features dozens of wholesale boats that gracefully navigate the waters of the Tra On floating market. The primary commodities being traded here are the abundant fruits harvested from the nearby orchards.

Observing the intricate choreography of goods being transferred from one boat to another is a fascinating sight to behold. This exchange of products, meticulously carried out on the waterways, ultimately leads to the distribution of these fruits to nearby markets, including those as far-reaching as Ho Chi Minh City. The bustling activity and vibrant trade at the Tra On floating market offer a captivating glimpse into the dynamic economic life of the Mekong Delta.

2. Cai Be floating market

The Cai Be Floating Market, contrary to popular belief, is not situated in Vinh Long province. However, it is in closer proximity to the provincial capital, Vinh Long, when compared to the Tra On Floating Market. Nonetheless, it's important to note that the Cai Be Floating Market has experienced a decline in its bustling activity, largely due to the enhancement of the road network in the region. Consequently, if your primary intention is to visit a lively and bustling floating market, you may find yourself somewhat disappointed if you choose to visit Cai Be, as it may not offer the vibrant atmosphere you might expect.

3. Cai Rang floating market

The Cai Rang floating market, while not located in Vinh Long, is an essential addition to this list. Situated approximately 40 kilometers away from the city of Vinh Long, its proximity warrants its inclusion. Notably, the Cai Rang floating market stands out as the largest and most vibrant floating market within the Mekong Delta.

Here, one can witness a bustling spectacle, where hundreds of boats congregate for the purpose of trading fresh fish, vegetables, fruits, and an array of other locally sourced products. The dynamic and lively atmosphere of the Cai Rang floating market is an integral part of the cultural tapestry of the Mekong Delta, making it an unmissable destination for visitors seeking an authentic experience in this picturesque region.

3. Van Thanh Mieu Pagoda

The Van Thanh Mieu Pagoda, also referred to as the Temple of Literature, should not be confused with the renowned Temple of Literature in Hanoi. Similar to its namesake in Hanoi, this temple in Vinh Long is dedicated to the veneration of Confucius. Constructed between 1864 and 1866, it has undergone several renovations over the years while still retaining its original architectural charm.

The pagoda's entrance is adorned with three gateways. Within the temple complex, the central edifice, known as Dai Thanh, serves as the focal point for the worship of Confucius and his four most illustrious disciples. Additionally, there are two smaller shrines named Huu Vu and Ta Vu, which honor the memory of the 72 most accomplished students of Confucius.

Situated just 5 kilometers from the city center, this temple is a noteworthy destination well worth a visit for those staying in the area. Its historical and cultural significance, along with its enduring architectural beauty, make it a captivating stop for travelers exploring Vinh Long.

4. Brickyard

The Mekong Delta is renowned for its plethora of traditional activities, offering a glimpse into the region's rich culture and heritage. A notable attraction in this regard is the distinctive brick factory in Mang Thit, which holds a particular allure for photographers and visitors alike.

This brick factory complex is a striking sight, with nearly 1000 distinct production facilities lining the banks of the Co Chien River. When viewed from the vantage point of a boat, the sheer magnitude of this arrangement leaves a lasting impression. It becomes evident why this experience is regarded as one of the top attractions to partake in when visiting Vinh Long.

With a history spanning over a century, the Brick Factory Mang Thit stands as a testament to time. Within its premises lies the largest production hub for red bricks and ceramics in the entire Mekong Delta region. The products manufactured here, including ceramics and bricks, hold a widespread influence, serving not only various regions within Vietnam but also finding their way to international destinations across the globe through exports.

5. An Binh Island

Just across the waters from the town of Vinh Long lies the expansive island of An Binh, spanning more than 60 square kilometers and encompassing four distinct communes. This region is primarily celebrated for its abundant fruit orchards, yet it also boasts a scattering of quaint villages and ancient pagodas, including the venerable Tien Chau Pagoda, which has stood for 250 years.

Connecting these villages and fruit orchards are a network of narrow roads, characterized by minimal traffic. This setting provides an ideal opportunity for exploration by bicycle. As you traverse the island's charming byways, you'll have the chance to indulge in the delights of hand-picking and savoring fresh fruit from the local orchards. Additionally, you'll gain insight into the serene rhythms of local life within the tranquil villages that dot the landscape.

Located in the southernmost region of the island, you'll discover the Vinh Sang tourist area. This destination offers a range of activities, including grass sledding and basket boat trips. It's important to note that the Vinh Sang tourist area primarily caters to domestic tourists and may not always align with the preferences of travelers from abroad.

How to get there

Vinh Long, situated approximately 130 kilometers from Ho Chi Minh City, is conveniently accessible by bus. The bus journey from the city typically takes less than 3 hours, and you have the option of choosing between regular buses or more comfortable luxury minibuses (which are recommended). These minibuses can transport you directly to your accommodation. If you happen to be staying in the countryside outside of Vinh Long city, you can easily cover the final stretch of your journey by taking a taxi.

Additionally, just 40 kilometers away lies Can Tho, the largest city in the Mekong Delta, which also features an airport with connections to various cities across Vietnam. Public buses operate on this route, but for a slightly higher fare, you can secure a luxury minibus that offers door-to-door service, ensuring a convenient and comfortable travel experience.

Best time to visit

Much like the broader Mekong Delta region, Vinh Long experiences distinct dry and rainy seasons throughout the year. The dry season extends from December to April, while the rainy season spans from May to November. If you prefer to enjoy clear blue skies and avoid precipitation, the ideal time to plan your visit to Vinh Long is during the dry season months.

Accommodation in Vinh Long

While there is a multitude of accommodations available within the town of Vinh Long, for those seeking a more authentic experience, it is advisable to explore options outside of the town, in the picturesque countryside. Within these rural settings, you'll discover a variety of lodging choices to suit different preferences.

Lodges and resorts present themselves as the most comfortable and luxurious choices, ensuring a pleasant stay with top-notch amenities. On the other hand, if you wish to immerse yourself in the local ambiance, homestays offer a more authentic and culturally enriched experience.

For a unique stay, you may also consider accommodations on An Binh Island, with a particular emphasis on the availability of homestays, allowing you to connect closely with the local way of life
