The Origin of the Name Halong Bay
"Halong" translates to "Descending Dragon." Before the 19th century, the name Halong Bay was not recorded in Vietnam's ancient literature. It was primarily known by various names such as Giao Chau, Luc Thuy, An Bang, An Quang, Hai Dong, Hoa Phong, and Nghieu Phong. It wasn't until the late 19th century that the name Halong Bay appeared on French maritime maps depicting the Gulf of Tonkin and in some French and Vietnamese-language newspapers. The "Hai Phong News" newspaper published in French reported: "Dragon appears on Halong Bay." The story goes as follows: In 1898, Lieutenant Lagredin, captain of the Avalanse ship, and many sailors encountered a pair of giant sea serpents in Halong Bay. Europeans associated this creature with the Dragon in the imagination of Asians. It was because of the appearance of this dragon-like creature that the area was named Halong Bay (according to the book "Culture and Arts of Quang Ninh," from one perspective, Quang Ninh, 2002).
